Here are tonight's Blue Chips...
I spent some time in East Texas this week and caught up with Newton (Texas) High head coach Drew Johnston to get his thoughts on new 2022 three-star Michigan running back target De'Anthony Gatson. Here are some highlights from our interview.
On what Gatson means to his program:
"He's our guy. Our program has a lot of tradition. We always have a lot of good players. But there is always that line. I call them the dudes. It's his turn to be a dude. A lot of what we do is based around him. He's going to tote the load, and I'm excited to see him do it. He's like Darwin Barlow (TCU running back from Newton), but in a bigger body. If he does what he needs to do right, he's going to keep having a lot of opportunities."
On Gatson's skillset as a running back:
"He's big at about 210 pounds. His best days will come when he's in a college football program and not doing basketball and track. He may play at 230 pounds. He can cut and change direction without slowing down. He learned a lot as a sophomore, especially when it came to running with his pads down. He was just used to being better than everyone else and running around everyone. When you play these tough teams, you learn how to lower your shoulder when you run. But he's still capable of running around you, too, and he can catch the ball pretty well."
On what Gatson can improve on:
"Just the competitiveness of playing at the next level. You know, everyone is good. He works hard, but he can always get better at his blocking. It's not necessarily that he's bad at it, but it's important, so I harp on him about that. I think he has a chance to be a really good one at the next level."
On Michigan offering Gatson:
"That was huge. We've had a lot of guys get recruited here, but I don't remember anyone getting an offer from Michigan. It's pretty cool. I told that the University of Michigan is one of the most prestigious programs in the history of college football. He was excited. That's a big deal. With us being so far south, they probably don't spend a lot of time down here, so that's a compliment to him."
