Here are tonight's Blue Chips...
*** I spent a good amount of the afternoon with Rivals100 Oak Park (Mich.) High lineman Rayshaun Benny today. Benny didn't workout due to a knee tweak so we basically chopped it up for about an hour. Overall, I feel really good about Michigan's chances here. I recently logged a FutureCast pick in favor of Michigan and get the sense that the Wolverines are in the pole position here. Michigan has done an outstanding job recruiting Benny and his family throughout the dead period.
*** This has been a complete Michigan staff effort, but you have to give credit where it's due, and defensive line coach Shaun Nua deserves a lot of it here. When I asked Benny about Michigan, the first thing he pointed out was his relationship with Nua. The two have really clicked, and Benny said he loves Nua both as a coach and person. Benny also had some very positive things to say about area recruiter Sherrone Moore and head coach Jim Harbaugh, who had a video chat with Benny earlier this week. Benny is actually supposed to get back on the phone with Harbaugh this weekend.
*** While Michigan is in a great spot, the Wolverines still need to close strong. Benny told me he's fine with waiting until December and could potentially take it into February depending on official visits. Benny didn't rule out pulling the trigger earlier, but he wants to be very methodical with his selection process. Penn State has been making a surge, and the Nittany Lions have had success in the Detroit-metro this cycle. On top of that, Benny admitted that he's been hearing some of the negative buzz about U-M in terms of in-state recruiting. Arkansas, Arizona State and Kentucky are some others to watch.
*** Again, I didn't get to see Benny work out, but I absolutely love him as a player. Some of y'all may think I'm crazy, but I actually have him graded above Donovan Edwards and Rocco Spindler. Benny really impressed me in-game last year, and he has the look of a monster three-technique. And by the way, Benny has only been playing football for three years. He started the sport late and still has a ton of upside. Keep in mind he's still listed as an offensive lineman. His potential is through the roof at defensive tackle. He's the most important remaining target this cycle, in my opinion.
