Here are tonight's Blue Chips...
*** Notre Dame just landed a commitment from four-star quarterback Steven Angeli, who had a Michigan offer but wasn't a guy the Wolverines were really pushing for. But that won't exactly help with Michigan's push for three-star Medina (Ohio) High signal-caller Drew Allar. I've gone ahead and put in a FutureCast for Allar to land at Penn State and believe this one could be a quick turnaround. While Michigan tried to make a move here, I never got the sense that he was really high on the Wolverines.
*** Quarterback recruiting has been pretty murky this cycle. It's an extremely weak year at the position, and Michigan is tasked with bringing someone in after JJ McCarthy, who was labeled as the future face of the program. One guy I've been banging the drum for since I saw him practice last summer is Tayven Jackson. At the time Jackson only had three offers. Now, Jackson is a four-star prospect with a slew of major offers. Jackson is an athletic signal-caller and a winner, leading his team to a state title this past season. Michigan is in a good spot for Jackson early on. He really likes the program, and it's not too far away from home. Right now, I have reason to believe Michigan is on his short list along with Oregon, Florida and a few others. By the way, new Michigan quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss has already made contact with Jackson.
*** A prospect the staff really likes that nobody is really talking about is three-star Clovis (Calif.) High product Nate Johnson. He only holds five other offers, but Michigan loves his athletic upside. He's an intriguing target and might be a smart take after landing the aforementioned McCarthy last cycle. Michigan was in on Johnson early and had success in the area last year, reeling in Rivals100 wide receiver Xavier Worthy. Weiss has already made preliminary contact here as well, so that should tell you Johnson is a guy higher on the board than his ranking may lead you to believe.
