This is something that has bothered me for a while. I couldn’t find any hard statistics but why don’t teams forget about trying to block a punt and always try to set up the return?
It just seems like you are a lot more likely to rough the kicker than block the punt. Which is essentially a turnover and momentum shifter. I understand the allure of blocking a kick and returning it for a TD but that almost never happens.
