I understand the OL is vastly better off than it had been, and he’s a pretty good recruiter (sort of, but I’ll get to that), but, is it more just our relief not having disasters like Drevo and Fray, as opposed to actual quality?

Hear me out:

Last season was the most talented Michigan OL in our history in terms of the NFL draft. Mayfield, projected first round pick. Bredeson is now starting for the ravens. Big Mike is the best rookie OL in the NFL. Ruiz first round pick. Runyan is now starting for the packers. If mayfield leaves, it is likely (barring injury) the entire 2019 OL will be starting in the NFL. That’s absurd.

with that said, was the OL ever really dominant? Against Iowa, OSU, army, Wisconsin, Alabama, and PSU we averaged 114 yards rushing on 3.2 yards per carry. Awful. You take away the ND hurricane trouncing, and this rushing offense was in the bottom third of the big ten.

if, an OL of ALL nfl starters, with 3 seniors, four guys that started 3 seasons or more, cannot produce at an absolutely elite level, when will the line do so?

Speaking of which, recruiting has been ok, but great? No way. We continue to struggle mightily to win battles for high level tackles (I like bounds a lot, but remember he was a very under the radar kid, good eval of course hence the bump, but ND largely didn’t push so it was really us vs. Virginia and BC, a fight we should ALWAYS win). What top level tackle has Ed landed while here over really any major program? I guess Gio, but he’s a guard to me. We also continue to take pretty well ranked kids but kids that aren’t really being pursued by major schools, certainly not OSU level. Crippen, Jones, Atteberry (both OSU and ND passed), carpenter (Clemson passed, Osu passed), etc. Rumler was a lock with his upbringing, ND claims to have moved on from Zinter (thank you). I would say the true big “win” of his tenure was Keegan. And that’s about it.

so, in sum, am I saying he should be fired? No. But I don’t get this talk of him being untouchable. I think for years with RR/Hoke/Drevno era, it was the equivalent of eating at Golden Corral every season and now that we’ve upgraded to chili’s we think we’re at Nobu.

If bringing in a new OC or offensive staff means losing Ed, I don’t think we should hesitate. He’s the 5th highest paid OL coach in the country. He doesn’t need the running game coordinator title. If that means we can get someone like Hart, etc.
