Big Ten tournament results...

and that ends game 2, Penn State 4, Michigan 1.

Penn State was all over Michigan in the first taking a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

They scored a 4th before Michigan made it 4-1 only to see it go back to 4-0 when the goal was waved off after review. Never clear on what the problem was, the suspected problem was Michigan was called off side during the review. The Wolverines did finally score one that counted to make it 4-1 at the end of the second.

Nobody scored in the third leaving the score 4-1 in favor of Penn State.

That ends the worst season of Michigan hockey in probably the last 25 years (or maybe a little longer). They showed flashes when they looked like they could play with anyone, but for most of the season they just made too many mistakes and lacked any sort of consistency to be able to win on a regular basis.

Now the waiting begins to see if there is a change in coaching or if Red will be back for another year. I certainly don't see any player on this team leaving early although there is some speculation that a player might be a target of an OHL team; mostly it's all about the coaching this off season. If there is going to be a change they really need to get it done so a new coaching staff can be in place and on the recruiting trail to start putting together a class for a year or two into the future.

The final game was a microcosm of the season - we generally play the opponent even, but a few breakdowns and they wind up in our net; we aren't quite skilled enough to finish our good chances; and we generally just put on an exhibition of just not being quite good enough. Oh, and AGAIN we give up a goal in the last 30 seconds of a period.

BTW I missed the first 5 minutes of the game on TV, did something happen to Lockwood? I never saw him on the ice.

So, interesting things Friday as other games played out.

Western Michigan lost and that moved Minnesota into position to take a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

That all ended later Friday when Penn State defeated Minnesota 4-3 in overtime to advance to the Big Ten championship game against Wisconsin. Minnesota has now dropped back to a #2 seed and that put Western Michigan back in as a #1 seed.

These are all the conference finals being played today.

Atlantic Hockey - Robert Morris v Air Force
Big Ten - Penn State v Wisconsin
ECAC - Cornell v Harvard
Hockey East - Boston College v Massachusetts-Lowell
NCHC - Minnesota-Duluth v North Dakota
WCHA - Bowling Green v Michigan Tech

Air Force is currently tied for 13th in the Pairwise so if they win that would help some bubble teams, however, Robert Morris isn't getting into the tournament unless they win so if they do that's a bubble team that is out.

Penn State should be solidly in, but Wisconsin is still one spot below the cut line (17th) so they really need to win to get in and if they do win that's going to push some team out of the NCAA tournament (right now that would look to be Boston College).

Both Cornell and Harvard are solidly into the tournament so the outcome there shouldn't impact the field other than seeding.

Massachusetts-Lowell is solidly into the tournament but Boston College is currently on the cut line (16th). Of course if they win, they stay in, if they lose they could swap places with Wisconsin, of course if both BC and Wisconsin lose or win they would most likely stay as is and Wisconsin is out and BC is maybe in.

Minnesota-Duluth and North Dakota are still solidly in so no impact on the tournament field other than seeding. The NCHC appears to be the only conference playing a consolation game which is going to be Western Michigan against Denver. If Western were to lose this game that would open the door for Minnesota to move back into position as a #1 seed. If Western wins that would pretty much solidify their hold on the #1 seed spot. Even though they lost yesterday to North Dakota Denver is still the overall #1 seed as of this morning so a win by them would just nail down that top seeding.

Finally we get to the WCHA. Neither one of the teams in this game, Bowling Green and Michigan Tech, are making the tournament field without the auto-bid so whoever wins this game is pushing someone out. Boston College is sitting at #16, but they could also win to secure a spot and that would mean the #15 team would be in jeopardy and that would be Ohio State.

By 11 or 11:30 tonight (ET) we should have a pretty good idea what the field will look like, at least what teams are in and what teams are out. Then it's all down to waiting to see what regional's teams fall into.

Still emotional about what happened Thursday. And since we are going to Chicago, seeing who makes it is pretty tough. ( as a side note- one of the major bicentennial celebrations on campus is the same night as the championship- so watching will be even more tough).

So for what is left- the one team I do not want to win in North Dakota. Next would be Denver- both because they are so close to us in terms of NC's.

For pride of the conference, I want Wisconsin to win- as PSU has a far better chance for an at large bid than OSU does. So we'd get 3. That would be nice given the B1G's struggle.

For personal reasons, my #2 to Michigan is Tech. So GO HUSKIES.

Other than that, with our team down so much, again, I've disconnected a lot from following who is good, why, and how they play. So I'm not sure what to expect next weekend, and moreso in April

and just to be complete, Penn State won the Big Ten tournament edging Wisconsin 2-1 in double overtime. The Big Ten placed three out of six teams into the NCAA tournament field; Minnesota (a 1 seed), Penn State (a 3 seed), and Ohio State (a 4 seed). If we look ahead to next year Notre Dame is in there too as a #4 seed (they are playing Minnesota in the 1st round).

There was only one team bounced out by an auto-bid, that was Boston College who got replaced by Michigan Tech when they won the WCHA. The WCHA was the only conference championship game where both teams involved were well out of the running for a tournament spot so whoever won that game was going to bounce somebody out and it ended up being Boston College. The other two opportunities for a team - who would not otherwise make the tournament - to bump somebody out were if Robert Morris had won Atlantic Hockey (they didn't) and if Wisconsin had won the Big Ten (they didn't).

See other thread for Pick-Em.

Too bad we are not in in it, but this is a really good NCAA field IMO, because there are no weak auto-bid teams. Tech is the only team not in the PWR top 16, as Puckhead notes, but Tech is competitive.
