they'll play a 5 minute 5 on 5 OT period, and if no one scores, before heading to the shootout they'll play a 5 minute 3 on 3 OT period.

Win in regulation or the first OT is worth 3 points. If it goes to the 3 on 3 OT, each team gets one point and the winner gets a second point.

(everything after the first OT counts only for Big 10 purposes; as far as the NCAA is concerned it's a tie).
