I really like the shape of our roster for the next few years.
Let's assume we get two years out of Charles Mathews. 2018 looks like this:
PG: Simpson, DeJulius
SG: Poole, Brooks
SF: Mathews, 2018 recruit, 2018 recruit, Watson
PF: Livers, Johns
C: Davis, Teske, Currie
A few notes.
First, I love the talent. On that roster, I see at least Poole, Mathews, and Johns as potential NBA talents, and I would not rule out DeJulius and Livers.
Obviously, we are very far away from being able to assess that statement with any degree of confidence, I'm just going by these individual players' attributes, and the way JB has been able to develop guys in that 50-150 range over his career at Michigan.
Second, on the list above, we still have two spots for a three man. Seems like we'll take Tyson if he wants to commit, and that's a nice get because I can see him with position versatility at the 2/3. Hunter and Iggy, on the other hand, would give us versatility at the 3/4.
Third, I would think there are several guys who may be transfer candidates if they do not see significant playing time this year, including Simpson (the presumed back up at PG), Watson, and maybe even Teske. Simpson seems like the biggest wildcard - at times, he showed flashes of being something special. Other times, he really struggled. I think he either wins the job in the fall of 2018, or probably moves on. It's certainly way too soon to write any of those three off, and you would think since Teske seems like our only potential rim protector, he'll have a role defensively in the years to come.
Either way, after some real struggles from 2014-2016 in landing top targets, it's nice to see JB and staff really land some of their top targets in 2017 and 2018.
Finally, one guy I really want going forward is Weems. I think he has superstar potential, and hopefully we can get him (and, for that matter, Steve Pearson in 2020 too).
