Michigan won a hard fought, 14-7 game against Wisconsin, but the Wolverines likely lost sophomore left tackle Grant Newsome for a significant amount of time. Newsome left the game in the second quarter with a knee injury when a defender cut him low at the knees, and though he refused to be taken off on a cart, the injury appears as bad as feared.
“It doesn’t look good. He was blocking on the edge and what he told me was he got cut right at his knee,” head coach Jim Harbaugh said. “I don’t know if it was a helmet or what it was, but I think a surgical procedure will be needed.”
Redshirt sophomore Juwann Bushell-Beatty replaced him and drew two penalties for lining up too far from the line, putting too many players in the backfield. He also struggled at times in pass protection.
Michigan has also worked true freshman Ben Bredeson at left tackle, and he could be a candidate going forward.
Former Michigan offensive lineman Doug Skene called the play “part of football.”
“That’s what defensive backs are taught to do,” Skene said. “They’re taught to go cut the offensive lineman, not injure … but it happens.”
There’s no timetable for Newsome’s return.
This really sucks, but Bredeson could probably step in and cover for him better then Bushell-Beatty.
