While Michigan split their opening weekend with Vermont and Waterloo, Minnesota played the only other regular season games by B1G teams, a weekend home and home pair against #1 ranked Minnesota Duluth.

Saturday Minnesota 1 Minnesota Duluth 1 (OT)

Finnish freshman forward Sampo Ranta, who changed his commitment from Wisconsin to Minnesota very late in the summer, scored the Gophers only goal in a tight contest.

Sunday Minnesota 7 Minnesota Duluth 4

Minnesota pounced early on three unanswered first period goals, two by by sophomore Brannon McManus. Minnesota then held on for the win as Minnesota Duluth poured 42 shots at Gopher junior goaltender Mat Robson.

Other Sunday Games

Penn State 3 Brock (Ontario) 2 exhibition
Wisconsin 8 Victoria (BC) 2 exhibition
Michigan State 3 Windsor (Ontario) 1 exhibition
US U18 NTDP 4 Notre Dame 1 exhibition

Only an exhibition game, but Notre Dame’s loss to the U18 national team indicates that Michigan may very well have their hands full Friday night when they take on the NTDP squad. Michigan ‘19 forward commit John Beecher had two assists in the US U18 win at Notre Dame.
