I was cutting through Canada this week to get to the regatta that the UM rowing team is competing in in Massachusetts. In order to effectively support the team, I brought my new block M cap that I just got as a Christmas present. We the ride was tedious, and I wasn't paying too much attention to anything, when I looked up and noticed a block M on the license plate in front of me. That immediately got my attention, and I thought to myself, ah...another Michigan alum on the trail. As I looked more closely, I noticed that it was a vanity license plate. After the block M was the word "Coach". That really got my attention, so I decided to pull up closer to see if I could recognize the driver. As I got closer, I saw an 'X' before the word "coach". So, I thought, this must be a former Michigan coach. So, I pulled up next to him and gave a little wave as he looked toward me. He waved back. Then I thought, he probably doesn't know why I waved. Fortunately, I had my new block M cap on the passenger seat. I slowed down so he could pull up next to me, and showed him the block M cap. He gave me a big smile and thumbs up. It was a good connection. I tried to figure out who it was. It looked like Coach Mattison, but I figured it couldn't be him if the "X" on the plate stood for former. But maybe he's preparing for the future. Anyone know what coach has a big dark blue SUV with a "XCoach" University of Michigan vanity plate?
