For the first time since January 1, 1999, I will not be in the stands for a Michigan football game. After 265 consecutive games, my streak of home, road, and bowl games will come to an end Saturday night. The last time I missed a game, my youngest son was just 3 days old.

For the first time since October 29, 2005, my youngest son will not be in the stands for a Michigan football game. After 182 consecutive games, his streak of home, road, and bowl games will come to an end Saturday night. He is now 21, and he hasn’t missed a game since he was 6 years old.

To the best of our knowledge, these are currently the 10th and 11th longest current consecutive game streaks.

The longest consecutive game streak belongs to our friend “Mr. 591.” His consecutive game streak of home, road, and bowl games dates back 591 games to 1971. To put those 49 years in perspective, he shared with me earlier this week that this weekend’s Minnesota game will be the first time he has ever watched a Michigan football game live on a color television.

As exciting as it will be to begin a new season, the beginning will be a bittersweet end for many of us, particularly Mr. 591. His streak of 591 consecutive Michigan football games is a record that will likely never be broken or repeated.

All hail Mr. 591 -- the ultimate streak for the ultimate M-fan.
