Columbus and Ann Arbor. When Thad Matta was at Ohio State he wanted to stay on an additional year. But Gene Smith could see the direction of the basketball program (.500 program in Wins and Loses) and Matta started having difficulties in recruiting. Gene called him into his office and told him the time had come for a change in leadership of the basketball program at Ohio State. I am sure that this was a difficult conversation to have but Smith knew his allegiance to Ohio State was more important than his relationship with Matta and he had to do what was in the best interest of Ohio State. It will be interesting to see if Warde has the same commitment to excellence at the University of Michigan as Gene has to Ohio State.
