Livers was Glen Rice-esque tonight. Smooth stroke and pure with his jumper. Efficient with capital E. He's talking a lot to his teammates and is animated. We need that. I love his game right now. No, he's not a great creator off the dribble, but he gets points with that pull up jumper. So sweet.
I was disappointed with our play after the 34-14 lead in the first half. BSU beat us way too often on dribble drives, and we got mixed up on switches. To their credit, BSU took advantage. They got to the foul line and knocked down some threes to close to 7 at the half. We were not knocking down our threes even though we had clean looks. Livers had the lone make in the first half. OTOH, we 24 in the paint. It's nice to have that when the threes aren't falling.
Franz has such long arms. Some of his drives look like they won't get anywhere near the basket until he leans in and extends his arm to end up with a layup. Finally, he dropped a three tonight. So did Brown after a tough night v. OU. He also has the pull up mid range game. He's not consistent right now and a little out of control at times, but he's a big factor going forward.
I'm sure that we were glad to play against a man to man defense where we can run our stuff and utilize our talent advantage. We found Davis in the paint rolling to the hoop and posting up. He was solid. His defense was bad at times due to his slow footedness. Dickinson had a nice game except for the fact that he missed some easy stuff because he wasn't assertive enough. His corner three wasn't close. He's a superb rebounder, and he outlets the ball beautifully. Juwan chose to start Davis again, which is fine. Dickinson gets his minutes.
I felt bad for Johns. He's been playing well, not so much scoring, but rebounding, defending and just being super active. But didn't see enough PT, IMO. At some point, he'll have a game where he takes off. Williams was also used sparingly. As a true frosh on this roster, any minutes he gets when the game is still to be decided are good. Against OU, he got more run because we were struggling and Franz was having a bad game.
I though that the backcourt was OK. Their guards scored most of BSU's points. We need to defend better. Smith had a nice game offensively, mostly on drives and short jumpers. He's our best drive and kick guy. Eli doesn't look to score that much. When he does, he's pretty good. Tonight, he drove a little more than usual. He did nail a three, and his shot is a beauty. He simply doesn't take it more than couple of times a games. He is one of the guys who will hit one in the clutch. Of the three guards, he's the best defender, although I noticed Zeb really fighting through screens. Right now, defense would be his ticket to. court time.
Nice to see the bench emptied with about 2.5 minutes to go. Faulds scored and Nunez had a nice shot block. What more could we ask for.
