Just overall, when you play a dozen guys significant minutes in the first game, there will be rough spots, e.g. 12 turnovers. We got a few different looks from GVU, which is what you want in an exhibition game opponent. Zone, man, half court trapping zone. The ran a motion offense, and we got beat off the dribble a few times. Lost guys on the perimeter, failed to match up in transition a few times. Our break was so so. High feeds were a disaster.

Best play was Brooks bounce pass down the lane to Teske for a dunk. Pass was a beaut, and Teske caught it cleanly before jamming it. Next best was an interior pass from a double teamed Teske to Matthews for a lay-up. Teske had a few good moments and has moved ahead of Davis in the pecking order.

Matthews looks like a scorer, one of those guys who is not a pure shooter but scores in a variety of ways. He and Mo did most of the rebounding. GVSU doubled Mo when he put it on the floor. Next step for him is finding the open man in those situations. Mo is intense, just needs to channel it. Mo and Matthews appear to be the heart of the team. That's who we build around.

The other veterans, DRob and MAAR, played that way. DRob found his spots, MAAR defended and attacked on offense. His shot was not falling after the opening minutes, but he had good looks.

The PG triumvirate didn't resolve anything tonight. All three had similar stats. Eli, to me, is the one to watch. Nice looking three point shot, ability to hit a pull up jumper, good defender, and the pass to Teske was one of those things that make you go "Hmmmm." Z is so quick and manages to break through the D for a layup on occasion. Sneaky with his passing. Three point shot still an issue, though I liked how he stepped up and hit his free throws. Simmons did not blow me away in this one, but I give him some slack as he's learning a new system. Had several convos with Beilein when he came off the floor. Made a three, tough runner and showed a strong handle.

Livers looked good out there but didn't get many chances. Looks like a B1G player. Didn't gain too much insight into his game tonight. I'm looking for him battle on the boards; that's what we could use most from him.

Poole just got a couple of mop up minutes. Don't know if he's just coming along slowly or if JB is unhappy with him. Didn't hear much at all about him in practice reports. Certainly a recruit who we thought could contribute as a freshman. You never know.

With Walton, we had a guy who could take charge with the ball in his hands. Not seeing that in anyone this season. OTOH, we can be aggressive because have a lot of guys who can play. Especially the PGs.

Edit: Completely forgot about Watson, who looked good. His shot dropped from 3 and mid-range. Looks smooth and athletic. He should see the floor based on what I saw today.
