The big takeaway overall is that we've pretty much abandoned the high ball screen offense as a staple. A lot of penetrate and kick. There was also some dump downs for post ups and inside out passing - Dickinson was impressive in that regard. Another takeaway is that we do have shooters on this club. We shot well today even with Franz not shooting well. The offense flowed, didn't stick, and there were trips where we didn't get a quality.

Defensively, Diggs and Turner got away from us, but those two are really good. We've could have switched out on Diggs a few times to better contest him, but he has a quick release and hit several with a man in his face. Turner exposed a weakness in stopping dribble drives. Dickinson showed that he can rim protect as he bothered a bunch of shots and blocked a couple. Couple of the fouls called him looked chintzy but no replays.

Our two transfers were impressive. Brown scorched the nets in the second half and crashed the glass for put backs. He looks like he can defend even though our team defense needs work. Smith. played a great floor game. He didn't get many chances for threes, but really has a knack for getting in the lane and making something happen. He sees the floor and gets the ball to open shooters. He's a big reason why the offense looked as good as it did.

Back to Dickinson again. He's very sound fundamentally. Always keeps the ball high in traffic so he doesn't get it stripped and he's able to get his own rebound and score. He was smooth and accurate from the line. I like the way Dickinson outlets on the break, too. Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, he's pretty close to Teske's game already as a freshman. I'm mightily impressed. Davis was solid. We need him to rebound at both ends and defend without fouling. That's what he did. He is also capable of scoring on post ups.

Livers, to me, is most valuable off the ball, getting kickouts at three point line and cutting hard to the lane. When he tries to create off the dribble, he's just not adept at that, at least not today. Early in the game he was able to post up a smaller man 12 feet out, worked the ball in some, and then settled for an off balance, wrong footed fade away. He'll off screens, kick outs and on the break. Those are his strengths.

In was also pleased with Johns. He drew a couple of cheap fouls, but I thought he defended well and rebounded at the four. Last season, was up and down, but he seems to be comfortable and knows his role. When he played 5, the D was kind of porous. The small lineup was a better matchup for BG.

Eli also had a nice game. He doesn't always look to score and stays very much within the flow of the offense. His teammates found him in the second half, he scored in transition and on a couple of nice drives. His defense was, as always, good. Jackson didn't get much run, and you can see why. His man blew by him two straight times, he committed bad fouls. He has a long way to go. Williams showed some of his grit inside, but he tried to do too much on a few occasions. He'll be OK in small doses until he learns his role.

For a first outing against a good team - BG has a nice anchored by Turner, Diggs and Browden - I'm very happy with what I saw.
