The playoffs are beginning to look like the annual meeting of Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Ohio St and "Miss Congeniality"
Its not the X's and O's, its the Jimmy's and Joe's
Coaching is important but recruiting and talent levels drive success in college football.
IMO: If you put together a coaching staff of Nick Saban, Dabo Sweeny, Urban Meyer and for good measure, we dug up Bear Bryant and Knute Rockne...on one staff, at Indiana for two years they could not finish higher than 3rd in the Big Ten East. If they took over Rutgers they could not accomplish that in four years.
My Humble Proposal: A Crazy Idea
The Winner of the National Championship will have 10 fewer scholarship available (75 rather than 85) and cannot accept transfers for the next three years.
The Runner-up for the National Championship will have 5 fewer scholarship available (80 rather than 85) and cannot accept transfers for the two years.
The Losers in the Semi-Final Round will have 5 fewer scholarship available (80 rather than 85) and cannot accept transfers for the next year.
I don't care about Fairness
I don't care about "fairness". I don't believe that every kid deserves a ribbon. However, I think that college football needs more parity because after a few years of seeing the same teams in the playoffs and national championship year after year people will become cynical and disinterested in the game. That is not good for the game. Changing the playoffs to 6 or 8 teams would change less than you think. At the end it will be the same names.
This could never get adopted but if it did it would be good for the game.
