I wanted to see where the breakdowns occurred and why they occurred on offense and it was really eye-opening to me see all of the little things that has this offense disjointed.
First off, AF was the most disciplined defense we've faced by far. They were almost always in position and they guessed right a lot of times. That being said, our play calling is a little suspect to me. The jet sweep inside the 15 yard line comes to mind as a wasted down. There's a whole lot less field to defend and it had little chance of working. Anytime you're in the red-zone and you're running plays that are not going forward (jet sweeps, WR screens, and anything that starts out parallel to the LOS) you're giving the defense the edge. The don't have to worry about vertical speed because of the condensed area and they are coming towards the LOS fast. AF also brought the house a lot inside the 15yd line. Not one single pass was attempted to your 6'7" TE in the redzone.
Blitz pickup/recognition and pre-snap reads were awful. Anytime the safety lines up directly over the CB, the CB is coming on a blitz. 100% of the time, no exceptions. Speight failed to recognize it twice or they shifted so late he didn't go back to reading the safety. Another 1st down play, they amass 3 defenders right behind the DL over the LT and LG. so we have 2 blockers and 5 defenders....Speight doesn't check out of it and we run right into the B gap on the left side and Isaac gets tackled by 4 of the said 5 defenders...wasted down and now we are behind the chains. Not sure why we aren't recognizing this and checking out of it, but also, why are we so predictable that AF knows where to amass their defenders....the right side was severely outnumbered in our favor, could've been a big play had we checked to a different run or counter run.
We don't throw vertical enough without the run action. I think we are condensing the field ourselves by our playcalling. Most routes are 15yds max. Safeties and DBs don't fear the deep ball because it's not an effective weapon, so they sit on these underneath routes. Speight was good when he was throwing guys open or throwing purely on trust knowing guys would run the route well and be in the spot. Right now, he can't do that. Routes are being run by less-experienced guys and some of these overthrows are because a guy ran a lazy route.
I honestly don't know how we are going to beat Purdue. Our defense can carry us, but they are not going to be able to shut down Jeff Brohm's offense. THe DBs are going to be taxed to make a lot of plays as JB is going to go to the quick passing game to minimize the effectiveness of our pass rush. They are going to score some points, but the question is are we going to be able to mount a sustainable offense that can put TDs on the board? Right now, they are too many little breakdowns occurring for that to happen. I wish I could blame the QB, but that's low hanging fruit. Hopefully, JH and Co can find some things to gameplan against Purdue because multiple personnel groups, etc., are not going to make up for the lack of execution. This offense really needs to take a leap forward this week for us to beat Purdue.
