On Monday, September 28th, my eldest brother, Mike, passed away unexpectantly because of an aneurism. He was just 57 years old. My brother is the reason I love Michigan Football and was the craziest fanatic I have ever witnessed. I thought I was an outgoing person, until I learned more about my brother as his funeral. He was avid Meeeeechigan fan, avid hunter and fisherman, Cad operator, husband, father, son, brother, grandpa, friend, and church goer. He literally saved the lives of 3 Irag veterans from committing suicide by just talking to them (this is what they shared with me). His greatest gift was the way he argued about anything and everything. It was his way to get people out of their shells and into life.
My brother was battling bladder cancer and winning. Last time I spoke with him, he was 1) not worried 2) trusted God more than chemo 3) happy and optimistic about life. I will forever miss my brother. The pain and devastation will never go away. However the love we shared for one another is stronger than death. I have lost my after the game discussion partner and no one can replace that. He was 7 years older than me, yet we were 2 peas in a pod. If I could only be half the man he was, I will have lived a most excellent life.
I never could get him to join the Fort, and I found out it was because he made himself available to so many people. I will miss him in the biggest way. The day he died, I had just said to my wife that I couldn't imagine the world without any of my brothers, all six of them. I appreciate the ability of this Fort to allow a bunch of fanatics to share our lives of all things Michigan and all things family.
He was given one last gift before he dies, the Lions won finally after losing 11 in a row.
God bless him, this Fort and all the members here, whether your heart is heavy with loss, or joyous with life.
