I put a lot of words in on Michigan teams here that have issues and tend to just enjoy the ones who have it all together and don't write too much.
This Michigan team gave me personally so much, at a time where so much had been taken away. I'm a season ticket holder for football and hoops. My son has sports games that keep me busy and entertained all year. All of these things were among the things taken away by COVID.
Then our football team, led by our can't miss favorite son, collapsed. Everything pertaining to my personal favorite pastime (following my favorite sports teams) had been taken away.
Then came this hoops team. Whatever the football team got wrong, the hoops team got right pulling together through the adversity of COVID. A program I thought was in trouble based on the loss of a legendary coach, suddenly looked to be ascending with, ironically, a favorite son but one that was the opposite of a lock to succeed.
Night in and night out they met every type of adversity they faced and swatted it like a fly. The staff and kids talked about playing for each other and for Michigan and experts raved about how unselfishly and hard they played. A dream to watch and made me proud to be even loosely associated with them through my alma mater.
Coach's quotes read like something I'd write if assembling a fictional novel about my UM. So humble, so gracious.
He and his team gave me something to look forward to. Something that could be counted on. Something to cheer for. Something to be proud of.
Every obstacle they faced they seemed to clear, most recently the loss of Livers covered up by the emergence of Johns. Every challenge they were presented, they overcame (almost).
Every big season ending loss hurts, all for slightly different reasons. The one burns because everything they were all year, they weren't tonight. They never blinked all year, tonight they blinked from the start. They played loose and tough all year, tonight tight and scared. That's the unique pain that comes with this loss. But that's OK. Its just the flavor of suck that comes with this particular season ending loss.
As time goes on that loss will mean less, but the team itself never will. A great Michigan team at a critical time of sports fan need for those of us that love UM.
Thanks to all of them. They are the reason we tune in each year, on the hopes that we will see a team like this wearing our colors.
Onwards and upwards.
