I get that attrition is going to happen, and there are 5-6 fifth years we will probably be in a position not to invite back.
I am actually fine with the idea that a 5th year is not a guarantee. (Personally, I would just like to give players 5 years to play 5, so it would be easier for players to take a real course of study... and eliminate this redshirt nonsense.) But absent that, I can live with a guy who isn't on the 2-deep not being given an extra year.
What makes me a bit uncomfortable is the idea that we could extend ourselves, commitment-wise, to the point where our coaches will be forced to create some attrition (or do what Harbaugh did with Kain Colter at Stanford, and just start giving a commit the silent treatment.) That inches us towards some of the ethical grey areas that allow SEC schools to take 20-25 more recruits than we do every 4-year cycle. I kind of liked the moral high ground we enjoyed by not doing that, even if it was a mild competitive disadvantage.
