And just when we thought it was over...

I was informed by a source yesterday that Virginia assistant Kevin McMullan and Auburn assistant Karl Nonemaker are "in the mix and on some level of candidacy" for the Michigan job.

McMullan is a hitting guru with a rich background in recruiting in the ACC on top of developing some of the conference's best hitters, including long-time Washington Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman. He's unequivocally the most intriguing candidate of all. He's been at UVA for 19 seasons and was named Baseball America's top assistant coach in college baseball three times (2012, 2017, 2020), an award based on a poll of 70 Division I head coaches.

Nonemaker was at Old Dominion for six seasons as an assistant and recruiting coordinator before taking the same role with Auburn in 2017. He's an excellent infield coach, and, according to Auburn's profile, he led the infielders to three of the top fielding percentages in program history between 2017-2021. The Auburn defense was the best in the SEC in 2021 and turned 53 double plays, 42 of which came on the ground. According to auburntigers.com, the team's .976 fielding percentage was the highest in a complete season in the last 28 years. In the same Baseball America poll that awarded McMullan as the top assistant, Nonemaker's name made a short list of select assistant coaches who are most likely to become successful head coaches.

At the time of writing, Jordan Bischel is still the leading name in the room, according to multiple sources. Central Michigan is aware of this and prepared to lose him to U-M.

However, as I said in yesterday's update:

"I write this with a sign of caution: this isn't an official report that Bischel is signed, sealed, and delivered. I will need a lot more detail to go into an official report ... Fast forward to today, when I received far more solid intel about Bischel being the lead guy in the race. In asking those same sources who previously provided information on Brdar, they hadn't heard anything since before the weekend ... With all that in mind, I still can't confirm that Brdar is out of this race. Let alone whether he's out under his power or because Michigan is going elsewhere with the hire."

Despite Bischel's name leading the pack, it's clear we're not yet done with this search.

The show goes on.
