Before I go in to my thoughts on the defense let me share that I agree the offense cannot have three and outs at the beginning of these games either.
Yes the Michigan defense is #1 overall and I am extremely happy for them. For that reason it gave them a chance for a huge come from behind win Saturday. Had Shea not taken a sack against ND it may have been another come from behind win. This defense is not a top 50 defense in the first quarter against the only two teams they have played with a pulse. We can blame it on being on the road or just simply against the best two teams they have played. 10 first quarter points against NW leading to an eventual 17-0 deficit in the 2nd quarter. 14 points allowed in the first quarter against ND and a 14-0 first quarter deficit. As much as we all know the offense cannot have these three and outs the defense has to make stops and get off the field early in these games. Give the offense some time to get in a rhythm rather than starting at a large deficit against decent to good teams. I agree with those who have said "bet you would take those defensive numbers if told that at the start of the game". I agree with others who have said it goes both ways.
My point is this is the #1 defense in the country and it needs to play that way in the first quarter of the tougher games on the schedule. If the defense starts doing this the season will have a much better outcome than some have stated after a great come from behind win.
Lastly a little rant for the entire Michigan football fan base. Whether on a blog, social media, at the game or any other forum please stop directing your comments directly to players. I wouldn't do it to coaches either but they can take it. For people to berate players on any form of social media where these players can see it is simply childish and unacceptable. I simply don't understand it. Please support the players and if you can't just come here to the Fort and talk about it without naming players in the subject line. This can be a great season for the Team and all of its supporters so Go Blue!!
